Rachel Ward

Meet Rachel Ward – a master of her craft. She has a passion for coloring hair and has been working as a Colorist for over 21 years. Rachel has a reputation as being one of the best hair colorists in Sedona. You can find her at Elite Salon.

‘Thank You, Rachel,’ for always doing your best with each hair service and for your love of Sedona.

What inspired you to become a hairdresser?

As a kid, I was always playing with hair – my hair, my friend’s hair, and my dolls. I think it was just a natural progression that I would eventually work with hair. I didn’t quite know where I was going with life, but it just kept coming back to that. Some girlfriends had gone to beauty school, and this was always in the back of my mind. So I decided to give it a shot. I’ve now been doing hair color for close to 25 years. I strictly do hair color. I went into a cutting program at Toni & Guy in Scottsdale when I first started, thinking that was my strong suit. It turned out that I was always helping the color staff, and finally, I switched. I have been a passionate colorist ever since.

Who is the most interesting person you’ve met in Sedona.

Mark Owen. Without him, we wouldn’t have moved to Sedona. He is the owner of the Salon, where I used to work and is genuinely a great and yes, an interesting guy.

Movies and Restaurants are part of the social scene here in Sedona. What is your favorite movie?

One that resonates with me is Fight Club with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. There’s an underlying statement of, ‘The things you own end up owning you,’ and I love that.

Rachel, of course, meets a lot of people and has learned a lot about their philosophies. From your experience, what advice would she give to people?

Don’t put off what you want to do now because you never know if there is a tomorrow. I know so many people who have held off travelling until they retired and then they die after 2 years of retiring. Seize the moment!

JK: (I’ve been thinking about this advice since she shared it. Thanks, Rachel!)

Her Bucket list has a couple of things on it, including river rafting down the Grand Canyon!

To go river rafting is entirely out of my comfort zone. It was my mother’s dream, and she never did it. I plan to make it part of my memories instead of one of my wishes.

What do you like about Sedona?

Sedona is not pretentious. There are a lot of people in the area who are high profile people, billionaires or millionaires, and you may be sitting right next to one, and not know it. I love the diversity of our population, but everyone here is on an equal plane.

If you were cast in a major motion picture, who would your co-star be?

Leonardo DiCaprio. He is a great actor.

Jonelle Klein
