Barbara Litrell

Meet Barbara Litrell – a real estate agent in Sedona, Arizona. Barbara chairs the Mental Health Coalition of Verde Valley and is active in the League of Women Voters. She and her husband moved from New York in 2002, first to Cornville until 2008, and then to Sedona for ten years. Currently, Barbara lives in Cottonwood.

She is very serious about Social Justice, whether it’s the Mental Health Coalition of the Verde Valley or the League of Women Voters. Each deals with issues that reflect social justice, regardless if it is about mental health coverage, physical medical coverage, equal rights amendment, voting rights, or voter suppression.

Why are your passion projects so vital to you?

The Medical Health Coalition of the Verde Valley began six years ago. It was a response to the community’s need for more discussion about mental health issues. I have been involved with the League of Women Voters and was the President for three years. I now lead the Political book club. Over the last four years, the group has read more than 40 books related to politics. We have learned about our history, politics, democracy, and the importance of our vote and our civic engagement. It has been an eye-opening experience.

How can people become involved in these organizations?

Everybody who might be interested in getting involved in Mental Health Coalition can visit: http://mentalhealthcoalitionvv.org/; Or if they want to get involved in League of Women Voters, visit: http://lwvverdevalley.com/.

You love to travel. If you could go anywhere, where would that be?

I would go back to Egypt. There are lots of similarities between Arizona and Egypt’s landscape. The desert environment and the colors all seem to resonate within me and nourish my soul.

What’s the best advice you can share?

Be ready to say yes to the unexpected.

I truly loved talking with Barbara and learning more about her!

Hi! This is such a great idea! I have lived here for over 30 years! There have been many colorful characters I have encountered in Sedona and the Verde Valley. I am 70 and my memory is fading, so I cannot remember them all. You have a great selection of nominees! Thank you!
